Foxhunter Care Communities, Abergavenny

70 bedroom care home

Development: Completed October 2018 Location: Abergavenny Client: Dormy Care

The 70 Bedroom care home is situated on the outskirts of Abergavenny, with a backdrop of the Blorenge mountain and surrounding hills. Planning consent for a Care Home had previously been granted on the site to a developer, the site was then transferred and we were invited to review the scheme and tailor it to the requirements of the end-user. Working with our client, the Local Planning Authority and Carter Lauren the scheme was reviewed and enhanced to create a grande central core and focal point for the home.

The two storey home is located between a small retail zone and residential development, and visually links the three developments together. The traditional style of Architecture and palette of materials embraced the policies and desires of the Local Planning Authority which helps to blend the new built form in with the existing residential properties and local vernacular. All rooms have been designed with large windows to maximise the benefit from natural daylight and enjoy many magnificent views to the surrounding countryside and mountains beyond.

The central area incorporates the main entrance and circulation core and provides a welcoming arrival point for residents, staff and visitors to the home, including a double height space, inviting people to stop and view the mountains and hills from the main entrance. The central area is the community hub for the home, housing a café, bar, gym and hairdresser, with great effort and passion expended to ensure these areas are beautifully designed spaces for everyone to relax, socialise and gaze. For those who like to slide away for a quieter time the first floor houses an art gallery with a balcony to take in the picturesque views.

The care home bedrooms, residents’ lounges, dining rooms and ancillary spaces have all been designed to make the home feel bright, welcome and ‘special’ for all those who live, work and visit Foxhunters.
