Horfield Lodge, Bristol
73 bedroom care home
MHA’s 73 place care home on Kellaway Avenue in Bristol is named to reflect the history of the area. Horfield Lodge recalls a large house of the same name that was on the site in 1881.
The care home is located on Horfield Common in Bristol, occupying a parcel of land of circa 1.25 acres in size. The site is largely enclosed by an existing stone boundary wall and mature trees, immediately outside the site is the open grassland of Horfield Common.
The home provides 29 places for dementia specialist care and 25 for high-quality nursing care, the home also offers 19 care suites - one and two bedroom apartments available for individuals and couples, all with 24-hour support.
Laid out along the linear site, the home was specifically designed to maximise views out across the park land, with most of the communal spaces taking advantage of views along the western aspect. A roof garden designed to the South of the building enjoys panoramic views of Bristol for residents at the 2nd floor level.
The final design and palette of materials was developed in consultation with the planning authority, with materials chosen to provide a palette in harmony with the materials and rhythm of the vernacular stone parapet walls of adjacent housing. The bays are further articulated with off-white render and cedar cladding which give a contemporary feel and connection with the mature woodland of the site.
In 2012 the development won the Bristol Civic Society Design Award.
