New Dementia Home

Sundials site plan

The Sundials forms part of a wider complex of buildings within the Retirement Community at Cote Lane in Bristol.

The Client identified a need to provide a dedicated Dementia facility in addition to the recently completed Garden House Care Home. Land adjacent to the home occupied by properties owned by the Charity provided the opportunity to design a purpose-built Dementia facility, finally approved in 2004.

The building is two storeys in height and accessed through a link to the Garden House which assists with staffing and movement of residents throughout the buildings and the Cote Lane Care Village.

The Sundials’ design allows a flexible approach to care to be delivered within an environment that is focused on reducing anxieties and encouraging the capabilities of each individual resident so that there’s purpose and meaning to every day.

The building enjoys a rich palette of materials with the use of copper, natural stone and hardwood windows.

In 2013 alterations were made to the home including a rooftop garden at first floor level to ensure residents could have ready and easy access to fresh air and the surrounding views.
